The New Facebook Layout Sucks, but…
I just signed into my Facebook account and noticed that they have now set their new layout as mandatory. Before today, there was always an option to switch back to the old facebook, but it seems today they have permanently removed it. Despite the fact most users didn’t like the new layout and even formed facebook groups protesting it, they did it anyway simply because they can.
Normally I don’t mind change, but let’s be honest - this new layout is ugly and not even remotely user friendly at all. While they show blatant disrespect for their users at every turn, at least we know facebook is an equal opportunity employer because they apparently hired a blind guy to design the damn thing. Ba-dum-ciss!
They moved *everything*. Every option, button, and menu item has pretty much been changed. It would have been okay to move a few things here, a few things there - but these guys literally gutted and replaced the entire setup. Even the way the feed is displayed in the profiles is vastly different, mixing status updates, comments, and everything into one big cluserbomb of fail.
Anyway, I spent like 10 minutes trying to figure out where they put everything when something caught my eye. I noticed that the ads now appear on the right side of the screen (Search Engine Style) instead of the left. This is probably a good thing because most facebook users aren’t used to seeing the ads on the right hand side when they log in, and this may increase CTR for advertisers. Since banner blindness has been reduced, this was probably the best part of the change.
If you like the new layout from a user’s standpoint, you’re either lying or wrong.
Liking it from a marketer’s standpoint is perfectly okay.
